A Letter to My Husband

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim
To my most beloved husband and most honored companion
Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

I praise Allah Taala, besides whom there is none worthy of worship, for He is our Creator and Sustainer. May Allah Taala shower His special mercies, blessings and peace on Muhammad, after whom there shall be no prophet.

Every day I thank Allah for bringing you to me, and me to you. There are many women from your people whom you could have married and many men from my people whom I could have married. However when The Best Planner decrees a matter it comes to a pass and I thank Allah for decreeing you as my husband, my partner in this life and the next.

My dearest,

At this beginning of our marriage, I am just a simple lady who is unaware of your personalities. Do tell me what you like so that I may carry it out and tell me what displeases you so I may forsake it for with this marriage, I have become you and you, me. May we be the cloth that covers each other’s weaknesses from the world.

Each day when you leave to find sustenance, I entrust your Deen, your safety and your final deeds in the care of Allah Taala. Fear Allah concerning us my darling, and feed us nothing that is unlawful. Truly, a small fortune that is lawful can lit a shabby home but a huge fortune that is unlawful rocks even the most expensive house.

Dear beloved,

I ask Allah Taala to shower our home with love and blessings, but a marriage is seldom a bed of roses. A man’s weakness is his ego and a woman’s weakness is her tongue. May Allah grant me the patience to remain quiet when you’re angry, the strength to be soft when you’re harsh and the wisdom to give advice when you’re down. I ask Allah to be reminded of your strength when your flaw prevails and I ask Allah Taala to increase our love for each other to the rank of Rasulullah and his beloved Khadeeja.

But, if ever one day your feelings for me slowly fades – utter your affection for me despite its absence in your heart and I shall do the same. Truly the turner of hearts is none other than Allah and have faith that your words are the prayers that will be answered by Him.

For this marriage is a gift from Allah and working for it is a means to please Allah. My hands are in yours for as long as Allah is your Guardian.

I am now reluctantly taking leave from you. Please lower your forehead that is always prostrating before your Rabb so that I may place a kiss on it. I shall extent my hands to you so that you may kiss them as well even though they do not serve you as well as they should.

May the blessings of Allah be upon you, and may He return you safely home very soon.

Current State of Ummah

"Hardly a day goes by except an incident occurs somewhere in the world that affects the muslim at a global level, and often times the news are disheartening and depressing that it only becomes natural for us to question - why is this happening to our ummah? Are we not the best ummah, is not Allah on our side? And yet we’re too scared to verbalize the question, for fear it contradicts our own faith. In this fear we have become paralyzed. And when we don’t have the courage to ask, how then will we have the opportunity to answer this question?”

Countless hadiths and revelations mentioned in the past, explicitly depicting the state of current ummah, masha Allah. Shaykh Yasir Qadhi - may Allah bless him and his family, got me glued in front of my laptop yet again, hehe. A Girlish Weekend

Question : What happens when Titts and Toots finally decided to go on our first holiday trip together?

Answer : We missed our flight to Singapore, that's what happened! Hehe.

Alhamdulillah, that was our only little mishap - thanks to the best friend who thinks the plane waits for commoners like us! I almost pulled a "But she's Proudduck!" statement but I was pretty sure the airport staff would go "Which nation is that?" (HAHAH) so we settled for a new flight ticket instead.

Despite the little drama at KLIA we were so excited when we landed, you had no idea! Singaporeans are known to be well, achievers - so Titts and I couldn't stop competing with each other the moment we touched down it was hilarious. Everything also nak menang! Hehe (No offense to Singaporean readers, you guys should really be proud of this trait!)

So in the short span of time we did the necessary - shopping at Orchard Road, night safari and awesome girls night in. Little bridezilla Titts is obsessed over her wedding (but lets face it, so were Mimak and I) so we spent the night planning the wedding. I surely foresee more of this coming our way!

The three of us concluded, every once in a while, it's nice to have a girlish weekend like this :)

By the way, on a completely random note - do you realize how completely inappropriate most video clips are these days? One time, all three of us were curled up in bed talking nonsense when out came Rihanna and her song on TV, barely clothed, all tatooed up, kissing boys and girls alike. SubhanAllah, I'm not one who pays attention to video clip but when I had a good look at one, it really scares me what has become acceptable these days!

"No wonder we were so screwed up growing up!" Asma' quipped. Hehe, true that!

It's really sad to realize how much we've progressed over the years and yet, we've regressed a lot more in terms of morality and decency. It's a challenging world out there I mean, just look at the three of us - we have Miss Free Hair Titts, Miss Semi Free Hair Asma and Miss No Free Hair Me hehe. All three of us are struggling in our own way and sometimes, it feels so hard to change but trust me, Allah knows this. He acknowledges that Hollywood is messing with our head and He acknowledges every step we take to improve ourselves - so keep on improving guys :)

My Hijra'

Love is a powerful thing.

It turns your world upside down and makes you do stupid things. It is the reason for that sheepish smile when no one is watching, for that giddy feeling only understood by one in love. Sometimes, love can be ruthless, but words ring true when Tennyson said it is better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all.

Indeed, for the longest of time - love has always been a powerful thing.

Hence it is very apt to remind ourselves to benefit, and not to lose ourselves in such a powerful force. And it is for the reason above, that this entry wins a ticket to Twins of Faith. There is honesty in the writing, of past mistakes and more importantly the apparent persistency to be better. Thank you to those who have shared their equally amazing stories with me and helped me reflect on myself - you know who you are :) May Allah increase all of us in knowledge and iman.

Enjoy reading the entry, and I pray that just as the writer, we will all find our other half who will complete our deen and makes us a better person inside out, insha Allah :)

Hijra to me means to improve one’s self continuously. It does not have to be something significant, a small step in the right direction can be the start of an important journey; as long as you keep making the small steps over and over again. Stealing a quote from one of my favourite movie, Any Given Sunday: “Don’t underestimate the inches you gain in life. At the end of the day, those inches can add up to a mile. Those inches can be the difference between winning and losing, living or dying”.

My Hijra’ will most probably be out of place when compared to how others describe theirs. My Hijra’ happened a few years ago. It happened when I met a girl, the girl.

At first glance, it is easy to dismiss her as an incomplete Muslimah. She belonged to the free hair group. She did not camp at the Musolla after Maghrib prayers, choosing instead to spend time in the college’s cafeteria, chatting with her many friends, both guys and girls. She had a flirtatious look in her eyes that no red blooded guy can ever resist. She came from a wealthy family, one that rubs shoulders with the most influential people.

Yes, it was easy to label her as an incomplete Muslimah.

Yes, it was easy to label her as bad news to a goody two shoes Mummy’s boy such as myself.

Yet, meeting her and knowing her was my Hijra’.

For beyond what others see of her, lies the true definition of a Muslimah. She is kind, going beyond what is required to help those in need. She is a true friend, honest and loyal until the end. She judges no one, built long lasting and true friendships with people from all walks of life, from children of tycoons to a girl from a village whose family own nothing but the shirts on their backs. She honours her parents, cares for her siblings and respected her elders. She observes the Rukun Islam wholeheartedly. She lives her daily life according to the teachings of Islam without making a big deal out of it, never one to do something just to make people think highly of her.

And when I knew her, I saw kindness and softness I never knew existed. Admittedly, it was her long flowing hair, her smile and laugh that got my attention (I was a teenage boy, what do you expect!). But it was what I saw of her on the inside that made me fall in love, as cliché as that sounds. I can pretend and say it was a “dating according to Islam” relationship but we were kids at the time and we were in love. It was an emotional relationship, filled with mushy “I love you” messages, tantrums, pouting/jealousy (not always from her!) but above all, total respect and devotion for each other.

And where are we now? Alhamdulillah, happy to say that we are now married, more than two years and I love this girl more today that I ever did. I respect her, cherish her and would do all in my power to make her happy.

Now, you may ask, what does all this have to do with my Hijra’? Well, as I said, to me Hijra’s is to improve one’s self.

And she is my Hijra’. From the first day I met her, I strive to be better.

To be a better partner. To be a better son. To be a better friend. To be a better student. To be a better brother. To be a better husband. To be a better father. To be a better Muslim. Why?

Because she deserves to be with the best partner.

Because her parents deserve the best son (well, son-in law).

Because she deserves to have the best kind of people as her friends.

Because she deserves to be with someone who works hard and achieves things that makes her proud.

Because she deserves to be with the best husband.

Because her children deserve the best father.

Because she is a true Muslimah and she deserves the best Muslim by her side.

That is why, this girl is my Hijra’. From the first day I met her, until today and insya Alah everyday for the rest of my life, I am improving myself to be a better person. Small steps, things that nobody but me would notice. Inches by inches.

And Alhamdulillah, a mile down the road, my Hijra’ is still going strong. With her as my companion, I will walk a million more inches.

After all, an inch could be the difference between winning and losing, between living and dying. Between jannah and jahannam.

Or, between free tickets and paying for myself! ;)

Halo on My Head

Last month Bloss got all excited to host another "Secret Santa" get together like we used to, where we would hold a small party, dress festively and exchange gifts. However being the party popper that I proudly am (hehe), I told them of my recent concern - that it is actually improper to host a religious celebration of other religions.

Don't get me wrong, personally I wouldn't mind joining our non-muslim friends for dinner on Christmas Eve (you can read the query here), but to actually host one, it's a completely different thing. For example, as much as I love my good friend, Vicky - I couldn't imagine him hosting an open house on Eid Fitri or worse, sacrificing a sheep on Aidil Adha....that's just plain weird!LOL.

But I really love the idea of Christmas, because in many ways their cultures are very Islamic :)

In Hadith Bukhari, the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) mentioned that among ways to increase love with one another is to feed food, give good greetings of Salaam and exchange gifts - all these could be found in the traditional family dinner on Christmas Eve, minus the wine, of course!

So I told them lets have it anyway, we'll change the small party to a cozy dinner just the few of us, skip the Merry Christmast toast, donate the Santarina hat to a non muslim friend and call it our secret friendship day thing! The girls started getting excited again and we even agreed to come in handmade headgears :D

I was wearing Jas C jumpsuit from Fashion Valet. Paired it with a long black cardigan, and I completely loveeee the look! The only problem is when you need to go to the toilet...oh dear, the hassle of being a girl....

It's been quite a while since I last promote FV :)

So on 9th December we had our small get together and guess what? Nobody had time to make their own headgears! So much talk and no action la us girls hehe. In my defense, I tried to make one but it ended looking like a small ugly hat with cronic chicken pox, so I gave up and went to Westin straight from the office. I was feeling all sweaty and ugly, and my dear friends just hadddd to look pretty on that day! So tak aci, pft.

Luckily, Bubs had an extra headgear for me!

My not-so-secret gift came from Diana - she was sooo thoughtful to interview my sister what to get me. Obviously my sister told her to get me a pair of shoes, because we always fight over her shoes (Proof = here!) and the best part was it fits perfectly!

Bubs and Bloss got their presents a little late because Dd was in Singapore and I only managed to get hold of Kalong a few days after the dinner. (I got Bubs a Kalong from Fashion Valet) Most of the items were sold out, so it was between brown, white and green Kalong. I absolutely fell in love with the green Kalong but I love my bank account too much to splurge on her, hehe. So I got Bubs the brown Kalong instead, the one that I recalled her expressing interest in just a few months ago :)

I would totally recommend every one to do this once in a while, to exchange gifts with your family, friends and loved ones.

Because lets face it, sometimes we're too busy for each other. Things change, people change and life alters accordingly. A sincere gift assures that despite these inevitable changes, you will always have their best interest at heart. It doesn't have to be something expensive, just something sincere. It's really heartwarming to see their faces lit up in anticipation and the joy of getting a surprise gift, I assure you, is something we could definitely live with ;)

So many good things happened the past few weeks, alhamdulillah!

First thing first, my baby brother is back from the US for a short break - and everyone was sooo excited about it (which was ridiculous btw because he's only been gone for TWO MONTHS! Hahahaha). But then, what can I say - my brother really is THE celebrity in the house. Being the youngest kid AND the only boy, he could literally get away with murder. Pfft.

My mom was smiling from ear to ear for the whole week waiting for him to come home and when the day arrived, my sisters and my mom actually printed posters welcoming him home!!! Seriously, when I first got home from Melbourne after a YEAR being abroad, all I got was an SMS from my sister asking what gifts did I bring home! Cet, so much love!

Life is unfair, and I thank my baby brother for giving me early exposure to this! Hahaha. But honestly, I wouldn't trade him for anything in this world - because he's my one and only younger sibling and underneath his macho exterior, he really has the kindest heart :)

And then I went for a supershort holiday with Titts to Singaporeeee to visit Asma' - the infamous traitor who left our country for love. Titts and I have alwaysssss wanted to go to Singapore togetherrrr, and with Mimak there - it was the perfect lets-go-push for the both of us!

The trip was greater than great, masha Allah we had soooo much fun in a short period of time! Can't wait to blog about it but I'm waiting for pictures from Titts. Going to Bangkok end of this week so you can imagine my spirit soaring high coz I love traveling soooo much. (My bank account however, doesn't seem to agree with me on this one. Hehe.)

Took the last flight home and left Singapore with a heavy heart, but God gave me an awesome gift - fever and flu made in Singapore, so I could get an extra day to rest before going back to work. (Thank You thank You thank Youuu God, You know I need this rest!)

The Power of Repentance

Undoubtedly one of the best lectures I've heard thus far, masha Allah!

Syakh Yasir Qadhi is currently a doctorate candidate in Religious Studies at Yale University. Take time to listen to his speech, and trust me, you want to hear his last few narrations of hadiths (cue - 35:00 - 45:00) - totally worth the wait! Even the Q&As, masha Allah they were soo, so interesting especially the ones asked by non-Muslims - may Allah increase all of us in knowledge :)

Excerpt from the speech : When Satan was expelled from Heaven, Satan challenged Allah and said, "I swear by You O'Allah, that I will misguide each and every one of them (mankind) for as long as they have a spirit within their bodies." And Allah replied, "And I swear by my own I'zzah (honour), that I will continue to forgive them, for as long as they turn towards me in repentance."

"O Allah, You are All-Forgiving and you love to forgive - forgive me for I have sinned and increase me in knowledge and bless me with the blessing of true repentance."

Beautiful Hadith

Anas bin Malik (RA) narrates that the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said,
“I wish I could see my brothers,"
The Companions asked, "Aren’t we your brothers O Prophet of Allah?"

He replied, "No, you are my Companions.

"My brothers are those who come after me and believe in me without seeing me.”

You're Family

I recalled our childhood days, hilarious as they were.

Titts was Baby Spice then, and I was Posh (don't judge us, we were TEN!). When Spice Girls came out with Impulse - Titts and I practically ran head first to the mall to get them, hehe.

We spent every recess together, and every weekend was a sleepover weekend then. Titts used to have a single bed, so we would sleep on the floor together and talk for hours until one of us starts to snore. I lost count of how many times we used to skip classes just to hang out together. We were so knit close and mischievous that even teachers were trying to separate us. Sweet Valley seemed real then, and we were obsessed over The Unicorns. I swear, it used to be a library of Sweet Valley in her bedroom and mine!

Looking back, we seemed so eager to be adults - Titts, definitely more than anyone else. I remember sneaking into our sisters' bedrooms, stealing their over sized dresses - posing for a body that was not quite there yet. We had matching pajamas, matching fury pink pens and funky diaries that we used to exchange over the weekends. Titts always brought back something cool for me from London and our collection of 'best friends jeweleries' were endless.

We had a vision of our "ideal life" fifteen years ago. That we would follow each other where ever life takes us, go to the same university, and practically grow old and ugly together. We even promised to make an extra room for each other when we build our own houses! :D

But life has an interesting way of diverging from your childhood dreams, and ours were no exception. After primary school, Titts and I learned to slowly live without each other - which, honestly was pretty easy after a while. Hehe. But the time would naturally come when we would pick up the phone to make crazy-expensive-phone-calls from London to Melbourne and vice versa. With her, it is always like old times. We would talk over the phone for hours and it would end with our customary I love yous.

I’m so proud of how far she has come in life, of Fashion Valet and of Dean. Sometimes, it feels like a lot of things have changed and at times, other commitments get in our way - but a true best friend is always there to stay.

What I would not do, to keep you happy, Titts!
After all, you're family. What is you, is me :)

Prayer for Guidance

Oh Allah!
I consult You as You are all Knowing,
and I seek ability from Your power and I ask you for Your great favor,
for You have power,
but I do not,
and You have knowledge,
but I do not,
and You know all hidden matters.

Oh Allah!
If You know that this matter is good for me in my religion,
my livelihood and my life in the Hereafter,
then make it easy and bless it;
and if You know that this matter is evil for me in my religion,
my livelihood and my life in the Hereafter,
then keep it away from me and keep me away from it,
and choose what is good for me wherever it is,
and make me pleased with it.

Ameen.

We may know certain things, but remember Allah knows everything - what is tangible and also what is in our hearts. What is in our presence, and what is to come. Surely, there is no better place to turn for guidance but Allah, The Most Knowing. It reminded me of a one late night, when Titts and I were BBMing each other:

"Isn't the thought of falling out of love, a scary thing?"

"Definitely. But change is inevitable you know, people grow up, stumble upon the ups and downs of life and there's no guarantee you will be the same person you once were."

"Dudeeee how to believe in marriage then, if feelings change and fade over time?"

"Well, mom always says she loves daddy for the sake of Allah, because it is pleasing in the eyes of Allah. Like how you can't NOT love fasting and praying, you can't NOT love your husband."

"And what if you just fall out of love? What if you just don't love him anymore?"

"Well, there is always that option out. But if you choose to stay in, then you rest in comfort knowing when you no longer love a person, you know your marriage is solely for the sake of Allah"

And I thought to myself, how beautiful is this religion, Islam? There is just no giving up no matter how hard life hits you. No amount of dirt thrown could dirty a practicing muslimah, she just gets prettier and better with time :)

Hello everyone! Yes, yes I've been missing in action for about a week or so and the reason is pretty embarrassing to share - I was guilty of not paying my internet bills *slaps self* So long story cut short, our internet got cut off, and then shortly after I fell sick and decided to get a good rest...offline :)

This weekend, I was lucky enough to have the presence of three handsome princes to grace my weekend - my little cousins from Kuantan!!! I loveee it when they come, the house just lit up with their presence and we alwaysss end up doing something touristy while they're here. Because they are all boys, they have crazy obsession over one thing:

Dina-freaking-sours!

I seriously don't get the drift, but I played along anyway. Last time around I brought them to PetroSains and they spent FOUR HOURS gushing over dinasours! Seriously, I couldn't imagine myself gushing for four hours over ANYTHING, much less a dinasour. Hehe. This time around, surprise surprise, they're still obsessed over dinasours so we head down to Pusat Sains for another round of dinasorous hours together.

Ayie, the youngest among the three stood in front of one very particular dinasour for a good 5 minutes, I was beginning to think that he was offering his prayers to the dead animals. Hehe. He even tried so hard to touch one particular dinasour, despite the "Do not Touch" signs we see at every corner!

Attention seeker alert. Hehe

Dinasours are unbelievable I tell you. There were some therapeutic information I thought I would share with you guys. You know how we girls get obsessed over our weight? My best friend and I are two of the same when it comes to this - even one extra pound gained could cause us to freak out for a week. I used to be slightly overweight, and I remember hating the fact that I could not fit into jeans. And then I saw something therapeutic I thought I should share with you guys.

If you think you're overweight just remember...

Dinasours are soo much heavier than you!!

And you know how we grumble over growing old, stepping into adulthood and feeling completely ancient when we look at young school girls? Well, if you think you're ancient, just remember....

You're just a BABY in dinasour years! Hahah. I obviously have nothing better to do.

One time Mirul, the bully among the three came running to me. "Kak Ina, Kak Ina - ada satu dinasour datang dari Melbourne, tempat Kak Ina study!" I was sooo excited and all camera ready to grab a picture of little Hugh Jackman in another form. I went there and guess what it read?

I was first found in Mongolia.

1. Like A Strong Binding Knot

‘Aisha raḍyAllāhu ‘anha and the Prophet ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam would use code language with each other denoting their love. She asked the Prophet ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam how he would describe his love for her. The Prophet Muhammad answered, saying: “Like a strong binding knot.” The more you tug, the stronger it gets, in other words.

Every so often ‘Aisha would playfully ask, “How is the knot?” The Prophet ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam would answer, “As strong as the first day (you asked).”

2. Love Twinkles

Once, as the Prophet ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam was sitting in a room with ‘Aisha raḍyAllāhu ‘anha fixing his shoes, ‘Aisha happened to look to his blessed forehead and noticed that there were beads of sweat on it. Mesmerized by the majesty of the sight, she remained transfixed staring at him long enough for him to notice.

The Prophet ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “What’s the matter?” She replied, “If Abu Bukair Al-Huthali, the poet, saw you, he would know that his poem was written for you.” The Prophet ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam asked, “What did he say?”

She replied, “Abu Bukair said that if you looked to the majesty of the moon, it twinkles and lights up the world for everybody to see.”

So the Prophet ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam got up, walked to Aisha, kissed her between the eyes, and said,

“Wallahi (By Allah) ya Aisha, you are like that to me and more.”

Letter to My Children (Part 4)

My children, know that your faith in Allah must manifest itself in your character. Tawheed builds Character. Speak the truth always, even if against yourself. Avert your eyes from immorality, pornography and junk TV. Keep your chastity and guard yourself from any stage of sexual immorality. Know that a friend is a window to your soul. Follow your heart and be true to your firasah (instint). Be just, firm and gentle in your dealings. When you are hurt, recover quickly and thank Allah for the difficulty that extinguishes sin. When you are well and all seems to be at peace, be vigilant and anticipate a brewing storm.

When you err, repent to Allah and seek not to conceal it from me by lying or deception. The greatest lessons you will learn will be through your naive misjudgement of peoples’ character, your over confidence and because you did not heed our advice as your parents. When you err, we are there. As bad as you may think it is and as embarrassing as you may find it, step up to me and I will run over to you. Know that you are brothers and sisters to one another. If your cousin slights one of you, it is as if he slighted all of you. Together you must remain as one.

My children, if pushed, push back harder. In life you must hit back. Let no one assume you weak on account of your spiritual inner peace. Learn to negotiate and compromise and dialogue while attaining your objective. Violence is not a solution. Peace does not mean fragility. Be sturdy, humble, durable and reflective.

My children, remember that your mother carried you and sustained you in her own body. For nine months she protected you and nurtured you. She loved you with an amazing intensity all throughout. The day of your birth and all that days that followed have only increased that love. Your illness is our illness, your success is our success. Know my children that I possess nothing of the dunya that is equal to you. I love you and will continue to love you as long as I live. Eventually, insha Allah, you will have children of your own. Make sure you write them a letter.

I ask Allah to grant me life, health and ability to educate you as my father and mother educated me. I ask Allah to put love in your hearts for humanity and to use you in the assistance of others.

I ask Allah to protect you and honour you with al-Quran.

I ask Allah to increase your rizq, lifespan and allow you happiness in this dunya and in the akhira.

Thank You Prince Court Medical Center (PCMC) for all the wonderful memories! I'm now back in KLCC-town, rocking the Corporate Finance world, insyaAllah :) I know I promised to post the farewell party pictures but there were too many, so I hope this little post will do for now.

Dila obviously loving the attention hehe

A special shout out to the Finance team at PCMC - thank you for everything, especially for the efforts you made on my last day, I will remember each and everyone of them. Its been a short stint but Alhamdulillah, I've made some really good friends and I consider myself lucky to cross path with you wonderful people :)

To Dila, you've been my pillar of strength when I struggled to fit myself in the healthcare industry. You were there for me, even when I (confidently) pronounced Catheter as Caterer :P Work has been so laid back, fun and yet effective with you - I almost wish I didn't have to go back to the corporate world! You tolerated me even when I have only one playlist in my Media Player on repeat for the whole ~~day~~ week. Hehe. Our little lunch adventure with Faye is one of my best memories in PCMC, I really wish I could pack you two in my handbag! :(

Okok, enough of these emoballs. To new beginnings!

Akhirah Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Suhaib Webb is the bomb, man!

Never have I ever seen an overflowing of people like I did yesterday. People just kept coming, and there wasn’t a single space on the floor unless someone was seated on it. It was amazing, masyaAllah (and a little hot too, hehe) – may Allah reward everyone greatly for it J

I can see what’s the attraction in this man - he raps, he recites the Quran, he jokes about 50cents, and reminisce on the Prophet days. He is soo easygoing and funny, he got me hooked with a smile on my face most of the time! He kicked off the topic on Hereafter by quoting the following:

“You will hardly find a page in the Al-Quran, unless the Hereafter is mentioned in it.”

SubhanAllah. On almost every flip of the Quran there is a reminder of the hereafter. Allah knows that we are grandmas and grandpas, that an hour of Gossip Girl is all it takes to change our mind from donning the hijab. So He reminds us, time and time again of our main objective in life which is to succeed in the Hereafter. We can have many objectives in life - to be wealthy, to get rid of those cellulites (yes, we all have them, thanks!) but do not forget that every objective in life is also our vehicle to the Hereafter. So make our life work for the hereafter. Because 50 years of driving a Ferrari is peanuts compared to a lifetime of Jannah or Jahannam.

And then Suhaib Webb elaborated on the power of Al-Quran.

Imagine this : So powerful were the words of our Rabb that they were able to spread love and mercy to the most oppressive society at that time - a society that buries their own babies alive! Sadly today, we showed little interest in The Book our Prophet (PBUH) lived and died for. We recite His words without understanding them, we gripped to age old ideas and developed a fear for asking questions. We argue based on our ignorance and let our arrogance get the better of us. We are we groomed to be better scientist, doctors, accountant…but a better muslim does not necessarily come along. Allahu musta'an.

It’s not too late to balance, improve and inspire others :)

Be like the Prophet, who was so generous to everyone that even the disbelievers were full of praises of him. Be like the ummah during the Prophet’s days – who were active in seeking knowledge and was not afraid to challenge and ask questions - even to the Messenger of Allah. Be not afraid and timid of change, instead let your creativity fosters in it, and let Islam be the leader of change.

But let's face it, life in this era is not easy. The prophet and us are more than 1400 years apart and not a day passed by without new challenges seeping in. Today, five minutes of E!News is enough to shake a weak Iman.

In all cases, have faith that Allah is near, that our relationship with our Rabb is close and intimate. Be on the straight path and when you feel the struggle gets tough, keep your eyes on the prize of Jannah. Remember the reward for trying to please Allah - is a promise of ease by Allah Himself. Suhaib Webb reminded that in today's term, this is Allah telling us - "If you have tried your best to be a practicing muslim, don’t worry of the results - Allah has got your back on this one." MasyaAllah.

At the end of the talk I felt so, truly inspired. I remember feeling “That’s it, this is Islam! It is not here to inject fear, but instead it inspires hope.” Suhaib Webb's advice to overcome Akhirah Deficit Disorder:

1. Take baby steps to be a better muslim. Even a micro-improvement counts in the eyes of Allah

2. Befriend good people. There is a saying that dogs can be better than human beings so choose your friends wisely lest go buy yourself a puppy and hide in your room, hehe.

3. Balance your life. At least once a week, attend Islamic event. Don’t just read blogs and discuss with random facebook friends. Buy authentic books, ask questions and discuss with the learned ones – seek answers, don’t just create confusions!

4. Be good to your parents, especially your mom. Truly, there is a world of barakah in a parent-children relationship.

5. Be good to others. Rightful knowledge not just makes you a better servant to Allah but also a better person to your surroundings.

6. More importantly, be proactive in learning the Quran and Hadith, because this is the only authentic treasures of the Prophet that is still here to this very day.

Lastly he said something that hits very close to my heart.The words were a little different but the message I hope is still the same. I leave you with the passage below:

“We all have our sins. Sins of the past, sin of the future and even sins of today. Most of the time, we look back on our past and feel like our sins have “tainted” us. But our sins could also turn to be the reason for us to wake up at night and submit ourselves to Allah. Our sins could be the reason behind the tears that streamed down our face at night. And at the end of the day, these sincere tears could help us in the hereafter….maybe even more so than all our good deeds put together.”

Allah will not give up on you, no matter how dark your past is. So do yourself justice and don't give up on yourself :)

Would your family conversations, keep up their usual pace
And would you find it hard at each meal, to say a table grace?
Would you keep up each and every prayer,without putting on a frown
And would you jump up early, to say your Fajr at dawn?

Would you sing the songs you always sing, and read the books you read
And let him know the things on which, your mind and spirit feed?
Would you take the Prophet (SAW) with you, everywhere you plan to go
Or would you maybe change your plans, just for a day or so?

Would you be glad to have him meet, your very closest friends
Or, would you hope they stay away, until his visit ends?
Would you be glad to have him stay, forever on and on

Bloss "Surprise" Birthday Dinner

My dear Sarah turned a year older yesterday! Iyra was in Singapore on a business trip, so I gladly took up the role to prepare for Sarah's surprise birthday dinner.

I am not exactly the best party planner in town. Last year, on a good friend's birthday, I emailed all my friends in the office to gather at the pantry to surprise her and accidentally included the birthday girl in the mailing list :P Two minutes later I got an email from her (Cc to everyone, no less!) asking if she should come join the crowd too -________-"

So I was extra careful this time around, and everything was on track...until the day arrived and Sarah said she couldn't confirm her attendance! *tears hair out* Everyone tried to persuade her to come but her reply remained the same, "Too much work babe, I really can't promise - it's all up to the boss!" At this point I honestly feel like driving to her office to strangle this boss, hehe.

Two hours before the dinner, she was still being a drama queen so I put my foot down.

Me : You have to come, Sar! I have big news to announce and trust me, you want to be there!

Sar: Oh my God, you're getting MARRIED?!!?!

Me: Yeah. Coz OBVIOUSLY, I'm 5 weeks preggy with my non existent boyfriend! Pffft. JUST COME!

Sar: You know I'd love to, but my work is killingggg me. I haven't had proper rest in days!

..........(5 minutes of silence)..............

Impatient Me : Okay fine. I HATEEEE to do this but you're being too impossible and I have no time for this, so here goes - We're celebrating your birthday dinner! COME. Bye!

HAHAHHAHA. I'm the worst party planner ever, friends would pay NOT to have me as their party planner! Despite the mini drama, everything turned out great. She came much later than everyone else, but that gave me enough time to buy her birthday cake, her giant birthday card, and prepare some table topic games!

As Sarah's awesome friends, we got most of our answers wrong during the table topic session hehe..except for Munir, who seemed to be Sarah's walking diary! I also got everyone to fill up a form on "What I like Most about Sarah" and "Our most Memorable Moment together"...I imagined it would be a personal gift she would treasure, but the boys ruined my plan because their answers were no where near sweet! Nothing beats Erol's award winning answers though:

The birthday girl was truly surprised to see that there were more than the usual four girls there! (So there was still an element of surprise, alright! Hehe). And then, of course the customary picture taking session took place.

Ask Me Anything Part 2

Okayyy, so I freaked out a little!
Hehe, no lah, I kid :)

Actually, I really, really enjoy answering your questions and you can never imagine how much your support, du'a and kind words mean to me. In this past 2 weeks, I felt more connected with my readers than I've ever been in the past two years that I've been blogging. Somehow you made blogging felt purposeful and more importantly, the purpose suits me and it felt right :)

Your prayers inspire me to be better, your random questions made me laugh, your crisis reminded me of my own weaknesses and the advice I tried to give you is also an advice I could give to myself. It was a great, win-win situation.

But I have to admit the volume surprised me a little (I mean seriously, where have you guys been all this while?? Haha). I felt too small next to your kind praises, and some questions were more challenging than others. A part of me acknowledges my lack of knowledge and imperfections, and I realized there is always a possibility that I may give an advice that isn't quite right. In all honesty, this intimidates me a little - especially when I feel unqualified to answer some questions.

Hence the change of layout :)

I have moved the Ask Me Anything questions and answers to a separate tab on the blog's sub-header above, so that you could still post questions and access the answers via my blog :) Please don't shy away from asking questions because I loveeeee responding to all of them! I just felt my answers were getting too much "limelight" by being on the main page and they don't deserve the "superstar seat" they were previously on, hehe.

Plus, the Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder side of me loves this new change. It feels less rojak and more systematic.

A Muslim woman’s strength of character should not make her forget that she should treat her husband with honor and respect. Even in those moments of anger which are unavoidable in a marriage, she would control herself and restrain her tongue, lest she say anything that could hurt her husband’s feelings.

‘A’ishah (radhiallahu anha) represents the highest example of this good quality, and every Muslim woman should follow her example. The way in which she swore an oath when she was happy with her husband, the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), was different from the way she spoke when she was upset with him. This is an example of good manners and respect.

Balance

It was a genuine and honest remark from a friend, expressing what she felt towards my new look. I smiled and told her that I'm still the same, but somehow - her words echoed in my head even long after the conversation took place.

I wonder if I have truly changed.

Physically, of course I've changed. But then again Allah knows, how many physical changes I've gone through in my lifetime. I started coloring my hair before I even reached puberty, and had my first hold of colored contact lenses as early as high school. I chopped my hair and walked like a boy in high school, acknowledged my feminine side and permed my hair in college, lost half of my weight soon after and experienced many, many questionable fashion days. When Titts visited me for the first time in Melbourne, her jaw dropped to the floor when she realized the colorful clown who came to pick her up was her very own best friend. Hehe.

I've been through numerous changes, more so than I could ever recall. But those changes remain merely physical in nature, and underneath them is still the same girl who laughs a little too much and talks till the cow comes home :) But to say that I am still completely the same after donning the hijab is somewhat hypocritical, when I personally know I don the hijab to change.

It is my hope and my du'a that donning the hijab would bring about many more changes.

That the scarf that covers my hair will also cover my heart from harm and my morale from wrongdoings. More than anything I pray that it will remind me to embrace Islam as a whole at all times because we all know it is all too easy to loose grasp on what truly matters in the eyes of Allah.

Sometimes I think to myself, how could I spent most of my lifetime pleasing people without pleasing The only One whose judgement truly matters? I've achieved so many worldly success, it doesn't make sense if I do not make significant attempts to achieve success in the hereafter too.

I suppose life is not just a balance between work, family and friends. Ultimately, life is a strike of balance between the world and the hereafter, between dunya and akhirat. A truly exemplary soul is one who is able to strike this balance and Allah knows I am far from being one, but at least I could start trying :)

And it is with this in mind that I hope my blog will continuously remind myself to reach this balance.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that in conjunction with the Independence Day, Prince Court Medical Centre has produced a video entitled "We're Together" which is going to be aired over Astro Channel 318 (MyMusic) from August 31st to September 16th. And the best part is it's 100% composed, prepared and acted by our very own talented staff (not yours truly obviously, my music teacher used to isolate me at the back of the class - she was smart to give up on me hehe). And if you have an eagle's eyes, you'd be able to spot a veeeeerry tiny weeny (pixelated!) me at the end of the video.

....and that's as far as I can go in the music industry, LOL.

When I was small, truthfully speaking, Ramadhan wasn’t exactly my favorite month of the year. I would hesitantly part ways with my food and my parents would restrict us from going to movies and cinemas. To me, this simply means I have less time to have fun considering I’d be too tired during the day and would be frequenting the mosque at night for Tarawikh prayers. I would focus instead on the coming of Syawal and the long holiday, raya cookies, the massive duit raya that I presume I was going to get and the things I would buy with my imaginary duit raya.

It was a phase I went through as a kid, and it lingered longer than I was willing to admit -___-

The turning point only came a couple of years ago, when I began questioning the significance of Ramadhan in a Muslim’s life. I mean, honestlyyyy, there must be something that fuels the positive energy in Ramadhan, right?? The curiosity led to a series of “investigation” and this is a small fraction of what I found out:

How beautiful is the month of Ramadhan, the month where Allah glorifies the earth with His mercy, opens doors for repentance and showers us with abundance of rewards. Unlike the previous generations who lived for hundreds of years, our lifespan today is rather short but ever so thoughtful and fair is He in His dealings to multiply the rewards earned in Ramadhan so that our good deeds signify hundreds of years of living.

No wonder everyone so semangat to be good in Ramadhan. Hehe.

Once, a colleague asked an Ustazah how do we know if our ibadahs are accepted by our Lord, whether we have fully benefited from the holiest month in Islam? Her answer was rather simple – if you have changed permanently for the better, God Willing you are on the right track. But if you remain the same as before Ramadhan (as it was for me, for a lonnggg time) you know there is a huge room for improvement.

At the end of the day, how many of us truly fast and persevere, how many of us “passed the test”, and came out of it….a better person?

In all honesty, I know I wasn’t one of them.

Ramadhan, for a long time was just a month where I “pause” my negative habits and “resume” them upon its departure. And it wasn’t until last year, when the questions above were posed to me that I began to realize how many Ramadhans have I wasted, how many golden opportunities to change that I have let go of.

I couldn't afford to let another opportunity go.

So this is my reflection, a reminder to myself that hits too close to home. It is based on my personal experience with Ramadhan and I hope it doesn’t in any way offend others :) I pray that this Ramadhan, we will be able to improve ourselves and achieve our targets - what ever they may be. I pray that we will be able to truly embrace the beauty of Ramadhan and that it will be our stepping stone to become a better Muslim.

One Strike of Event

Earlier last month, I failed one of my CA papers.

It was my first fail in my entire life so naturally, I took it harder than I should.

The lame part was I tried sooo hard to appear cool about the whole thing but who was I kidding right? Not only I had to fork out almost RM2,000 for ONE supplementary paper, I also had to read the textbook all over again and re-sit within two weeks time without study leave *shivers*

The pressure was definitely on.

Everyone could tell that I was depressed in the first few days, my t-shirt might as well read “Depressed Woman on The Go”. Once, I wore two watches on my left arms without even realizing it. On another day, I was reversing my car down the hill when I pressed the pedal full on instead of the brake. Needless to say, there goes my bumper and RM500 worth of cash =(

I don't think it's explainable how one small strike of event could made me feel like my whole life is a country worth of confusion. Some old, long suppressed feelings emerged out of no where and I actually felt helpless of my own feelings. I prayed and prayed and prayed for acceptance on a lot of things, and I prayed that this failure will help me learn so much more than had I passed the papers with flying colors.

Alhamdulillah, despite no study leave - the short time frame actually felt sufficient. Within days I was able to laugh about my failure and talk openly with friends and family. I strengthened my relationship with others and I had more than enough time to reflect on myself, my life and my history before I go to sleep.

If I could reverse the time, I would probably still choose to fail the paper. Hehe. The failure has helped me recognize the more fragile part of me - a part of me that I have long withhold. It taught me things that I would not have learned had I passed the exam.

I guess my point is dear friends, when bugged with problems and obstacles, lets try not to focus on their difficulties. Concentrate instead on the opportunities and benefits that we can still reap out of them because everything happens for a reason. And the beauty of life is such that we determine the reason based on our reactions to what befell us.

When I think back of what had happened last month, it was almost as if the failure helped me turn over a new leaf. And that, in itself is better than passing any exam with flying colors :)

The Perfect House

I definitely have a thing for wallpaper. I can imagine going wallpaper crazy with my new, non-existent home. Pink here, green there, yellow here, flowers everywhere- huuuuuuge indecisiveness issue!

But in all honesty I can't imagine going crazy over house designs. When I think of the ideal future house, the image that always springs to mind is a simple off-white house, with wrought iron balcony and tall green trees.

And look what I found recently:

The Perfect House!

I know I know....There's nothing low key about this house. It has luxury and class written all over it! But it's the idea that captures me. I can imagine a budget version of this house, with half the land size, and a quarter (if not one tenth) of the budget size, hehe. In my dream, I imagine going Kate-William at the main balcony, waving to our non existent crowd *princess waves*

And, with a bedroom as pretty as this, I would probably spend half of my day just being in my bedroom, smiling broadly at my wallpaper,hahaha...Obviously I have huge growing up issues with a bedroom as pinkish and as feminine as this!

But of course these are just daydreams and wishes.

Here in KL, properties are so expensive I couldn't even imagine buying a fancy apartment - what more a bungalow with spacious land/garden. I would probably be indebted for life!

Sometimes I really wonder how do our parents do it, how were they able to provide so much? It's not even about building pretty homes anymore. Just the idea of growing a family, providing for them - so much responsibilities that are honestly foreign to me right now.

Of course, building a life together from scratch is not easy. But I suppose if you do it right, and you keep your loving spirit and patience in tact, everyday can be blissful in its own way - regardless if you're living in a mansion, or a modest hut (:

Yana's Bachelorette

Time has a way of passing you by without you realizing it. One second you're in your pajamas eating ice creams, doing homework with schoolmates, and the next thing you know one of you is getting married!

A dear friend of mine got married yesterday.So about two weeks ago, we held a Bachelorette party for the then, yummy bride to be. I had to drive alllll the way to Glenmarie Cove, Klang (that's going down Toots Guinness Book of Record all right!), but whats an hour drive compared to eleven years of friendship right?

The girls went full force to transform the house into a red and black Bachelorette party. I spent hours looking for a red top only to arrive to a group of girls wearing anything but red. Pffft.

If you haven't notice it already, we had 18SX nicknames for everyone that night and they were hillllaaarioussssss. It was compulsory to use nicknames for one night so imagine me going "Hey masturbater, what's for dinner tonight?" LOL

And because it was a surprise party, we had to "blindfold" the bride to be all the way to Klang. So this was what she looked like when she arrived:

It was amazing fun just being around each other, reminiscing on our highschool days. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard and had so much fun with the bunch of them - it was as if we never grow up! Highlight of the night came when we gave a round-the-table toast to the bride to be, recalling some of our best memories together through endless laughter and inevitable tears.

Unfortunately, what happened in Glenmarie Cove stays in Glenmarie Cove. Suffice to say, what followed next were good food, even better games, and the ultimate bonding session - suddenly it was high school all over again!

Last night, for the solemnization we all came as instructed - in purple with scarves and we were all sooo, so anxious for her (except for Hana, who was more interested on the bride's dress -__-). When the akad happened, some shed tears more than the rest but ultimately we were all very happy for her :)

So Yana, if you're reading this, here's us wishing you dear girlfriend all the love, happiness and blessings the world has to offer!

Times Like This

As chatty and bubbly as I can be, sometimes it feels easier to sit back and conceal a part of my emotion from others. And it seems that of late, the struggle to not be able to fully express my emotion became a little....unbearable.

So this Father's Day, I gave my dad the best "present" I could ever give him - I gave him all my problems :p

He just reached home from outstation that evening, and he was sitting quietly at the living room reading the news,looking slightly tired from the flight home. I slowly made my way to him, hugged him and wished him Happy Father's Day.

And just as he was about to thank me and go back to his reading - I broke down and cried in his arms. Tears just flew down my face like waterfall and I was pretty sure I shocked him with my little drama Queen moment. Hehe. Before I knew it, I told him of all my worries through my chokes and tears.

I didn't expect to tell him so much, but it was then - right that moment when I was in his warm embrace that I felt safe and unjudged, and that I could pour everything....and I did.

And I'm glad I did.

In his soothing demeanor, he calms me down. He told me not to loose hope, and that life without its lows and troughs is a life not worth living. He told me that in every hardship there is blessing and he said all that while I sob and cry like a five year old in his arms.

He probably used all the cliche lines in the world and yet, who would have thought that those words were exactly what I needed to hear :)

Time and time again, a moment like this would remind me that no matter how far I go in life, no matter how much older and more mature I've become, my father will always be my pillar of strength.

It reminds me that a father's love is often silent yet strong, unexpressed but felt greatest at times like this.

Just last month, we had a mock disaster drill to prepare for external disasters. This time around the scenario was such that there was a massive accident at the city center, and the casualties/victims were quickly sent to our hospital.

I went to watch the drill....and ended up being one of the actors!!

My role

I thought it was going to be easy breezy, you know just act all sick and helpless and needy - girls are brilliant at that! Hahah....I even had my script ready in my head - I wanted to be the impossible patient with so much complaints and grief. (Might as well give them the worst case scenario, right?)

But when the whole thing started, I was just so shocked and dazed to see first hand what it was like to be in an emergency situation! From the moment the ambulance arrived, everything just happened in a blink of an eye and I just freezed and ternganga like that.

Gone were my scripts and imaginations - obviously not my proudest moment!

Some patients were calm and collected after being treated...

Some just never know when to stop acting.....

I had soooo much fun at the drill! It was nothing like our usual, corporate fire alarm drill where people move out the buildings like robots. This one actually felt pretty REAL. It was the closest I've ever been to being Meredith Grey.....or in this case, her patient! Heheh

For a moment I thought what it was like to be a doctor who deals with life and death scenarios.

The amount of pressure on their shoulders and the ultimate satisfaction of being able to save lives. It is a career I could never imagine myself living. I mean, we could afford to make mistakes in the office, in our proposals, in our investments, but a mistake in the hospital could cost lives *shivers*

Obviously I'm not cut to be a doctor, but I have soooo many friends in that industry and I'm very proud of them. Nada, Yan, Dr Fit just to name a few - you guys do me proud :)

Pre Loved Saga

Whew.

Selling 130 items in 3 days on your own is NOT advisable my friends. Don’t be like me - perasan I have superpowers when obviously, I don’t! There were no secret hands, no wind beneath the wings, no underlying power – nehi nehi. What you will have though, are unsightly eyebags….and loads and loads of emails to reply! Hehe.

But despite all that, these past few days have been a great experience. I am definitely a sucker for good bargains and I get super excited when I see one. Now I can safely testify that being able to offer a good bargain and make people happy is almost as good a feeling – if not better!

There were some small gestures that count too (:

A customer gave me a little gift when picking up her order (thank you so much Beep!) and a few customers gave me tips on IT, post and delivery - very helpful bunch of people. Then of course there were free labors around i.e. my sisters who helped me with the orders and show their support by watching TV while I struggle with HTML -_-

My little cousins came all the way from Pahang for a weekend visit and obviously I haddd to exploit them too. (How else do you think I was able to sell at such low prices? Child labor, ma man!)

Show no mercy!

The highlight was when I got orders all the way from Sabah and Brunei - Excites me so much that my pre loved items will be traveling the milesss to their new owners (Should probably include a sleeping kit for their traveling comfort, hehe).

Some of you have queried if I will be selling more of my preloved items online, and the short answer to that is…yes, I will.

I stopped halfway last weekend because I was too exhausted to continue -__-

Having said that, I have no intention of setting up a blog shop – occasionally I will post new pre-loved items that will be on sale. It won’t be frequent or regular but you can subscribe for email updates and be notified accordingly – the wonders of technology!

My sister who just got back from UK for good wants to sell most of her Dorothy Perkins accessories – so I guess that will be next. I ran through some of her stuff and fell in love with most of her accessories so I grabbed them before any of you could! Hehe. The accessories will only be up next Friday because this weekend, I’m taking a break to attend the awesomest Malaysian FA Final - KELANTAN Vs TERENGGANU!
